Game of the Week, by
Alan Lasser
The
oddsmakers who installed Viswanathan Anand as the 6-1 betting favorite to
defend the title in the current World Championship match didn't
understand Boris Gelfand's strategy at all. Since the advent of the
system of short time limit games as tie breakers to decide chess matches,
Gelfand has proven himself to be the champion of the tie breaker playoff.
In one match
after another Gelfand minimizes his risks, often taking short draws with the
White pieces in the regular games, to push towards a final even match score
that must be resolved in a tie break playoff. He is a good speed player
with good preparation and very good nerves. Invariably, in the tie
breakers, it is his opponent who cracks under the pressure.
Maybe Gelfand
feels less pressure because he is usually the underdog, but whatever the
reason, his tie break playoff performances are impressive. This is the
guy who has used the relatively new playoff system to punch well above his
rating. It is as if a soccer team was winning all its big games in the penalty
kick shoot-outs.
Once again,
this time with the world championship at stake, the classical time limit games
of the match are accumulating towards a final even score. The pressure is
steadily mounting on Anand to get a lead before the regular 12 game match is
over and Gelfand's strategy can pay off. Of course, the World Champion is
a formidable opponent, what are the chances that the match will be tied at the
end of twelve games?
At the start
of the match, I thought Gelfand's odds were at least chance one out of three;
now it's probably closer to fifty-fifty. Not that it even matters,
but there's a rumor going around that the best chess player in the world is
some guy named Magnus.
